Two Large Earthquakes Shake Alaska Sunday

The USGS has reported that a pair of large earthquakes shook South-central Alaska Sunday evening, July 5, 2015.

According to the Alaska Dispatch News [1]:

The first earthquake hit at 4:49 p.m., had a magnitude of 4.9, and was centered 38 kilometers southwest of Talkeetna, according to the USGS [2]. A second earthquake less than a minute later shook nearly the same location and had a magnitude of 5.1.

The Alaska Earthquake Information Center also listed two earthquakes, a minute apart — one at magnitude-4.72 at 4:49 p.m., and a second at 4:50 p.m., which registered as magnitude-4.75.

Earlier Sunday, an earthquake struck 20 kilometers northwest of the Arctic community of Kaktovik, in the Arctic Ocean off the North Slope coastline. That earthquake, which occurred at 11:26 a.m., registered as magnitude-4.6, according to USGS.
