Millions of bees descended Wednesday on southern Israel, blanketing commercial centers and spilling into residential areas, in scenes evoking the swarms of the ancient biblical plagues.
Dramatic videos and photos circulating on social media and Hebrew media show dense clouds of bees filling the air, clustering on parked cars like living carpets, and swarming building facades and balconies.
Shop owners reportedly slammed doors and windows shut in the middle of the day as the massive insect invasion unfolded.Local authorities in Netivot issued an urgent advisory, urging residents and visitors to avoid the area entirely and keep their distance from the bees until the authorities can safely manage the situation.
A Swarm of Biblical Proportions?
The sheer scale of the event — with reports describing tens of thousands of bees in individual clusters and an overall presence reaching into the millions — has prompted many to draw parallels with the plagues described in the Book of Exodus.
While the biblical plagues famously included locusts as the eighth affliction sent upon Egypt, the image of overwhelming insect swarms has long stirred religious and cultural resonance in the region.
Some online commentators have already labeled the phenomenon a “modern biblical plague,” noting the timing and intensity.
A single healthy beehive can house tens of thousands of bees, and when multiple swarms converge or a particularly large colony splits and relocates, the numbers can multiply rapidly into the hundreds of thousands or more.
Israeli media outlets, including Ynet and public broadcaster Kan News, described the bees as having “invaded” the shopping complex and nearby streets. One local beekeeper told reporters she received dozens of calls from residents across the city reporting heavy bee activity in homes and businesses.
