Reports that President Donald Trump is weighing a possible presidential pardon for Sean “Diddy” Combs have ignited outrage among many Americans, who argue that the disgraced music mogul’s federal sentence was already too lenient.
Trump is discussing a new round of clemency with advisers ahead of a series of Independence Day pardons dubbed “250 Pardons for 250 Years”, according to reports. Trump administration insiders familiar with the deliberations say Combs is among several high-profile names under consideration.
The reports have shocked many Americans who followed Combs’ criminal case, which exposed disturbing allegations of abuse, exploitation and elite blackmail. Combs is currently serving a federal prison sentence after being convicted on prostitution-related offenses under the Mann Act, while jurors acquitted him of racketeering and federal sex trafficking charges.
The idea that one of the world’s most powerful men could erase the punishment of one of the entertainment industry’s most notorious blackmailers is difficult to comprehend.
However, a presidential pardon would not erase public opinion. For many Americans, Combs’ reputation was destroyed long before sentencing, and they argue that granting him clemency would send a message that celebrity status and powerful connections provide VIPs with a literal “get out of jail free” card.
The reports are especially controversial given Trump’s long history with Combs. The two moved in many of the same New York social circles for years before their relationship cooled after Trump entered politics.
In the past, Trump has acknowledged that he would consider the facts of Combs’ case if asked to issue a pardon.
