USGS: 6.5 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Chile

The US Geological Survey (USGS) has reported a 6.5 magnitude earthquake near Santiago, Chile on Monday.

The quake struck offshore near the  of town of Illapel 130 miles (210 kilometers) to the northwest of Santiago, USGS reported on Monday. The epicenter of the quake was at 15.3 miles (24.7 kilometers) depth.

The cities of La Ligua, Salamanca, and Illapel were the closest to the epicenter.

No tsunami warning has been issued.

Today’s quake is  the latest in a series of aftershocks since a massive 8.3 quake hit in the same area last Wednesday when 13 people died

Chile is still recovering from last weeks quake which triggered a tsunami and saw the evacuation of over 1 million people.
