‘One Week of Total Darkness’ — Switzerland Issues Urgent Grid Collapse Guidance to Every Household

Fact checked by The People's Voice Community

The Swiss government has issued urgent preparedness guidance to its population, instructing citizens to stockpile a week’s worth of food and water, keep cash on hand, and prepare for the systems they depend on — electricity, banking, supply chains — to stop working.

The guidance, distributed through the Federal Office for National Economic Supply (OFAE) and amplified by cantonal civil protection authorities, recommends that every household maintain reserves sufficient for seven days of autonomy. The checklist is stark in its simplicity: nine liters of water per person, non-perishable food, a battery-powered radio, flashlights, candles, a gas cooker, personal medications, and cash.

The timing is everything.

The Architecture of Anticipation

Switzerland has spent decades building the infrastructure of survival. The country maintains approximately 370,000 underground shelters with capacity for nine million people — roughly one shelter space per resident.

The concrete shells are designed to withstand conventional weapons, explosions, and radioactive fallout. Filtration systems guard against chemical and biological agents.

Even with these preparations, the Swiss government appears to be urging citizens to prepare for an unprecedented event.

An extensive renewal program is underway for some 200 protected command posts and 200,000 shelters. In 2026, the Federal Council commissioned a detailed concept for medical protected spaces, to be completed by 2028.

A separate study is examining how to protect the roughly 29 percent of the population who commute — people who, in a crisis, would be away from their assigned shelter when the sirens sound.

The sirens themselves are being modernized. The Federal Council has proposed a multichannel alerting strategy, including cell broadcast technology to send text alerts to every mobile phone in an affected area. Alertswiss, the government’s alerting app, will be expanded to function even without network connectivity.

The message embedded in all of this is not subtle: the authorities expect that one day very soon, the systems will fail.
