Comedian Victoria Wood Dies Aged 62

The British comedian Victoria Wood passed away after a short battle with cancer.

She was surrounded by her family, her publicist Neil Reading confirmed saying:

The multi Bafta award-winning writer, director, actor and comedian died peacefully at her north London home with family this morning. She was 62. The family ask for privacy at this very sad time.”

Victoria who was born in Prestwich, Lancashire started her career in 1974 when she won the ATV talent show New Faces.

It was in the 80s that Victoria secured her place as one of Britain’s most popular standup comics, with shows such as Victoria Wood as Seen on TV and Wood and Walters, alongside longtime collaborator Julie Walters.

She also wrote and starred in the TV series Dinner ladies which ran for two years from 1998.

As well as television, Wood wrote a stage musical Acorn Antiques, based on the long-running feature in her sketch show.
