Tony Blair summonsed to give evidence over IRA comfort letters scheme

Tony Blair has been ordered to appear before a parliamentary committee to explain his involvement in the IRA “comfort letters” scandal after repeatedly refusing to attend.

The former Prime Minister was accused of being “extremely disrespectful to the House” for his “continuing lack of response” to requests for him to give evidence.

The Northern Ireland Committee is investigating the so-called “on-the-runs” scheme which saw letters sent to up to 200 suspect IRA fugitives assuring them they were no longer wanted by the police
