The UK Government has issued a final warning regarding an imminent alert due to reach millions of mobile phones across the nation next month,

Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Pat McFadden, has urged the public to gear up for the second national trial of the UK’s Emergency Alerts system.

Millions of smartphones on 4G and 5G networks across the UK will make a loud siren-like noise on the afternoon of Sunday September 7 at approximately 3pm.

A test notification will then be displayed, clarifying that the message is part of a drill.

MSN reports:This upcoming test marks only the second instance of its kind and aligns with the government’s pledge to routinely verify the system’s functionality and acclimatise residents to the alerts, mirroring protocols in nations like Japan and the USA.

Previously, the alert system was deployed in Wales and parts of England in response to Storm Darragh last December. Furthermore, during January 2025’s Storm Éowyn, around 4.5 million individuals in Scotland and Northern Ireland were warned of perilous conditions.

In Plymouth, the system proved instrumental in the swift evacuation of 10,000 locals following the discovery of an undetonated WWII bomb, reports North Wales Live.

Pat McFadden commented: “From major storms to wildfires, this system could save your life in an emergency. Just like the fire alarm in your house, it’s important we test the system so that we know it will work if we need it. It’s part of our Plan for Change to secure the nation and keep people safe.

“This test will be one of the biggest public safety exercises in our nation’s history. Mark the date, spread the word, and take a moment to think about how you would respond in a real emergency.”

In preparation for the nationwide drill, the government has launched an awareness campaign to inform the public, with special attention to vulnerable groups such as domestic abuse survivors. The campaign includes the first-ever national information video in British Sign Language.

The content of the test alert was disclosed last week, stating: “This is a test of Emergency Alerts, a UK government service that will warn you if there’s a life-threatening emergency nearby.

“You do not need to take any action. In a real emergency, follow the instructions in the alert to keep yourself and others safe.
