From an article in USA Today: “A small memorial was growing Saturday for a 9-year-old girl who died after a hole she was digging on a Lincoln City beach collapsed.

On Friday afternoon, Isabel Grace Franks, of Sandy, was digging a three to five-foot hole in the sand a few yards from the ocean near the Seagull Motel on Northwest Harbor Avenue, according to the North Lincoln Fire Department.

The sand apparently collapsed on top of Isabel just before 5:15 p.m. and she was buried for around five minutes, witnesses said.

When fire officials and Lincoln City police arrived on the scene, family and bystanders were trying desperately to dig the her out.

Officials helped get Isabel out of the sand and a nurse on scene immediately administered CPR.

Paramedics rushed her to the Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital in Lincoln City, police said, but she wasn’t breathing.

Isabel was pronounced dead around an hour later.

She was visiting Lincoln City with her parents, along with other family and friends.

On Saturday, mourners created a memorial on the beach for the girl, placing flowers, pinwheels and seashells near the spot where she lost her life.”
