Body Of Missing Wall Street Journal Reporter Found In New Jersey River

The body of a missing Wall Street Journal reporter David Bird has been found in a New Jersey River more than a year after his disappearance.

His body, which was found this week in the Passaic River and was positively identified, New Jersey prosecutor Fredric Knapp said on Thursday.

Bird was 55 when he disappeared in January 2014 during a walk near his home in Long Hill Township, New Jersey. He never came home and had been considered a missing person ever since. An investigation into the cause of his death is now underway

NYTimes report: Still unknown, however, was how Mr. Bird died, precisely when, and whether the authorities believe foul play was involved.

Those are among the “good questions” that relatives of Mr. Bird, including his widow, Nancy, would, “like answers to as well,” Heide Alexander, the administrator of the website, said in an email.

In a joint statement issued on Thursday, Frederic M. Knapp, the prosecutor in Morris County, and Michael Mazzeo, the chief of the Long Hill Township police, said the county medical examiner’s investigation into the “cause and manner of death is ongoing.”

It was on Wednesday that emergency responders retrieved the body of a man from the Passaic River after two men canoeing around 5 p.m. saw a red jacket in some branches and called the police, officials said. Mr. Bird was wearing a bright red jacket with two yellow zippers, bluejeans and sneakers when he was last seen last on Jan. 11, 2014. He had told his wife that he planned to go for a brief walk through the wooded trails around their home.
