NYTimes report: Still unknown, however, was how Mr. Bird died, precisely when, and whether the authorities believe foul play was involved.
Those are among the “good questions” that relatives of Mr. Bird, including his widow, Nancy, would, “like answers to as well,” Heide Alexander, the administrator of the website, said in an email.
In a joint statement issued on Thursday, Frederic M. Knapp, the prosecutor in Morris County, and Michael Mazzeo, the chief of the Long Hill Township police, said the county medical examiner’s investigation into the “cause and manner of death is ongoing.”
It was on Wednesday that emergency responders retrieved the body of a man from the Passaic River after two men canoeing around 5 p.m. saw a red jacket in some branches and called the police, officials said. Mr. Bird was wearing a bright red jacket with two yellow zippers, bluejeans and sneakers when he was last seen last on Jan. 11, 2014. He had told his wife that he planned to go for a brief walk through the wooded trails around their home.
