On September 23, Alberta's chief health officer Deena Hinshaw was asked the following question by a reporter: "Can you explain why parents don't have the right to know if there are Covid cases in their child's school?"

[Correction: An earlier version of this story erroneously stated that Deena Hinshaw had declared that all untested sick people in Alberta would be deemed Covid-positive. This is not the case. We have therefore updated the headline and corrected the story to more accurately reflect the facts.]

On September 23, Alberta’s chief health officer Deena Hinshaw was asked the following question by a reporter: “Can you explain why parents don’t have the right to know if there are Covid cases in their child’s school?”

She said: “Disclosure of individually identifying health information, as would happen if individual case notifications happened in schools, would be a violation of an individual’s privacy and their rights under the Health Information Act.”

The answer by Hinshaw does not mean that anyone who becomes sick in Alberta is counted as a Covid-19 case.
