She was born in the Worsbrough area of Barnsley on 27 May 1900 and lived in the South Yorkshire mining town all her life.

She was also reportedly the eighth known oldest living person in the world.

It is believed that Ethel was the last living British person to have been born during the reign of Queen Victoria and she lived through two wars, six UK monarchs and 22 prime ministers in her lifetime.

She became the oldest person in the UK after Grace Jones, from London, died aged 113 in 2013.

Ethel Lang is survived by a 91-year-old daughter, Margaret Bates, who paid tribute to her sharp, independent mother, saying “how wonderful it is I had a mum for so long in my life.”
