Western New York Expecting Tons Of Snow

Western New York is bracing for a massive snow storm. According to an article on Syracuse.com: Parts of Western New York could get nearly 6 feet of snow from a massive lake effect storm pounding the area today, the National Weather Service said.

“Based on reports this morning of some areas from south Buffalo to Lancaster of nearly 40 inches already, and the fact that the band will not move much through late afternoon, we have increased storm totals to around 70 inches in the hardest hit areas,” the weather service said.

The Buffalo office, which has seen its share of big storms, called this storm an “incredible lake effect snow event.”

This lake effect storm is particularly intense because Arctic air is sweeping across the warm waters on lakes Erie and Ontario at just the right angle to catch a maximum amount of moisture and turn it into snow.

Portions of Tug Hill could get 2 feet of snow or more from this storm.

While some areas just south of Buffalo are getting buried, areas nearby have seen only a dusting. Photos from West Seneca show several feet of snow already. The Buffalo Airport received only 3 inches overnight, but 2 feet fell just four miles away, according to WSYR-TV meteorologist Jim Teske.

Snow has fallen at rates of nearly 7 inches per hour. Hamburg is the snowiest place in the United States today, picking up 14 inches in two hours this morning.

More than 100 miles of the New York State Thruway in Western New York has been shut down because of visibility.
