The sight of a Weasel Hitching a ride on a Woodpecker appeared on social media a few days ago in a tweet by Jason Ward.
- The nest robbing Weasel was apparently holding on to his Lunch.
- The photo was taken by east London hobby photographer Martin Le-May.
- The ‘European green woodpecker’ was in a Fight or Flight situation with the weasel, according to Le-May who took the picture while out for a stroll with his wife.
- The Woodpecker seems aware of the whole situation.
- She lands near to the couple, offloads the free-riding weasel, who was also distracted by the couple, and flies away.
ABSOLUTLEY INCREDIBLE photo by Martin Le-May. Green Woodpecker and Weasel. Apparently the Woodpecker escaped. pic.twitter.com/PUt1b2Mbhs

And it looks as if Le-May got the perfect shot following a confrontation between a weasel and the woodpecker.
“The bird flew across us and slightly in our direction; suddenly it was obvious it had a small mammal on its back and this was a struggle for life,” Le-May told Business Insider in a statement submitted through e-mail.
That was when Le-May snapped the picture. Eventually the bird landed back on the ground and started struggling with the weasel.
The weasel became temporarily distracted by Le-May and his wife, which gave the bird the chance to escape.
