An upside-down U.S. flag—a traditional signal of dire distress—was spotted flying outside the State Department this week, fueling speculation amid an aggressive Trump administration probe into key government agencies.
The image, first shared on Reddit and later circulated on X, comes as Elon Musk, now head of the Department of Government Efficiency, spearheads sweeping investigations into the State Department and USAID, calling the latter a “CIA cut-out” and vowing to “feed USAID into the wood chipper.”
Tensions are mounting as reports emerge of USAID employees being locked out of their offices and government systems, raising uniparty concerns over the extent of Musk’s power.

“Because of the death of President Jimmy Carter, the Flag may, for the first time ever during an Inauguration of a future President, be at half mast,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
This flag protocol has been a long-standing tradition for sitting and former presidents, which Trump will also be entitled to in the future.
Nevertheless, the Republican nominee wrote: “Nobody wants to see this, and no American can be happy about it. Let’s see how it plays out. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN.”
