Argentina has announced it will withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO), a decision made by President Javier Milei following the United States’ own exit led by President Donald Trump last month.
Milei, who shares a close political alliance with Trump, has been critical of the WHO’s handling of global health matters, particularly its response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Pandemic Treaty which attempted to override the sovereignty of nations.
“We will not allow an international organization to interfere in our sovereignty,” warned presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni during the press conference in which he made the announcement.
Citing Argentina’s lengthy lockdown under the previous administration, presidential spokesperson Manuel Adorni explained that the country’s decision stems from “deep differences” with the WHO’s management of health crises.

Adorni also cited a “a lack of independence from the political influence of other states.”

Trump similarly claimed the global health agency had mishandled the COVID-19 pandemic and other international health crises, and that it required “unfairly onerous” payments from the United States, its biggest funder.
