SpaceX, Tesla founder Elon Musk’s space company, launched a rocket today with cargo headed for the ISS, or International Space Station, only to explode and break apart upon launch.  The SpaceX rocket, called Falcon 9, is the third failed attempt to deliver cargo to the ISS in the last 8 months.

According to a report by NBC [1]:” The Falcon took off right on time after a seemingly flawless countdown, rising into the sunny skies over Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florda at 10:21 a.m. ET. But a little more than two minutes after liftoff, video showed the Falcon 9 disintegrating.

‘We appear to have had a launch vehicle failure,’ NASA spokesman George Diller observed. Air Force officials said the rocket ‘experienced an anomaly’ 148 seconds into the flight.”

Elon Musk tweeted regarding the incident:

According to a report on CNN Money [2]:

“SpaceX — which is headed by Musk — has made seven trips to the ISS under a contract the company has with NASA. It is the first company to complete a return trip to the space station, a feat previously achieved by only governments.

The failed cargo flight was carrying more than 2 tons of supplies, including 1,500 pounds of food and provisions for the crew aboard the space station.

In a statement, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said the failure of the resupply mission will not affect the safety of the astronauts on board. Current supplies should last for several months and resupply flights by other operators are scheduled in coming months.”
