Police have reported that an active shooter at the Carmike Hickory 8 Cinema in Nashville is dead.

The gunman armed also with a hatchet, was killed after opening fire during a screening of Mad Max

One officer entered the theater and exchanged fire with the gunman before the SWAT arrived and fatally shot the man in a gun battle, according to reports.

Shots were heard being fired at the movie theater on Bell Road just before 2 p.m.Wednesday.

WSMV reports: A South Precinct officer entered the theater where Mad Max: Fury Road was showing. There, he encountered the gunman in the projection room. The gunman and the officer exchanged gunfire.

A Metro SWAT Team later engaged and killed the gunman just inside the movie theater.

“We believe the imminent threat has ended,” Aaron said.

Police said they believe one person may have been injured by a hatchet, but that is still being investigated by the Nashville Fire Department.

Aaron said the gunman had two backpacks on him at the time of the shooting. Crews are working to make sure there is no danger with those backpacks.

Officials at Vanderbilt University Medical Center said they are not expecting any gunshot victims, but they don’t always know ahead of time.

Witnesses at a nearby business reported one person covered with blood.

The Ford Ice Center has been placed on lock down. The Global Mall, which is next to the theater, has also been placed on lock down.
