I have spent months poring over the public record of Valerie Kneale’s death, and I now believe the truth is much darker than the official narrative. In my view, the 75-year-old grandmother was raped in her hospital bed, then deliberately drugged to death to cover up the crime and prevent her from ever identifying her attacker. I believe the killer is most likely the person who prescribed or administered her end-of-life (EOL) drugs – someone with the access, the motive and the means to exploit a ward where drug abuse was routine.
This is my theory – and it’s just a theory – built from inquest testimony, police statements and media reports. It is not a statement of fact. But, from what I’ve read from the information available, I believe that the evidence points in one direction – and that the drug charts could hold the key.
Valerie Kneale was admitted to Blackpool Victoria Hospital on November 12th 2018, after a minor stroke and a fall. She was alert and surrounded by family – except for one overnight shift: 11:30pm on November 12th to 7am on November 13th.

In my opinion, the assault happened during this time period.

That night, Matthew Pover, a Band 5 senior nurse, was the only senior nurse in charge. The ward was locked. Keycard access was required. From evidence supplied, it would appear that this was the first time, Valerie was alone since being admitted to the hospital.
Forensic pathologist Dr. Alison Armour testified: “The injuries were inflicted at least 48 hours before death… consistent with a forcible sexual assault… I have only seen injuries of this severity in high-impact road traffic collisions.”
I believe the Stroke Unit was a “hospital of horrors” – a phrase used by the media – where illegal sedation and drug theft were normalised.
Nurses working at the same hospital – Catherine Hudson and Charlotte Wilmot – were jailed in 2023 for drugging patients “for an easy life,” with Hudson bragging in one text: “I’m going to kill her off tonight.”
Matthew Pover pleaded guilty in 2023 to stealing and supplying the drug zopiclone – the same class of sedative used to sedate patients elsewhere on the ward.
Operation Bermuda uncovered illegal sedation of at least eight patients, some of whom died.
In my opinion, drugs were not just stolen in that hospital – they were regularly used as tools for control, silence and cover-up.
Here is my proposed sequence of events:
- November 12th-13th, overnight: In my view, Valerie is raped during the only unsupervised period. The assault causes catastrophic internal bleeding.
- November 13th, morning: Staff note her “marked deterioration.” In my opinion – and after thoroughly investigating the misuse of EOL drugs over the last five years and producing three documentaries on the subject – I believe EOL care is initiated too quickly – within hours – to avoid scrutiny.
- November 13th-16th: I believe sedatives or opioids are administered in excess, under the guise of comfort care, to:
- Hasten death
- Mask the assault
- Prevent Valerie from regaining consciousness and speaking out about the attack
- November 16th: Valerie dies. The post-mortem, delayed 18 days, reveals the assault but toxicology is not prioritised.
- Evidence vanishes: Blood-soaked bedding is discarded. The room is cleaned. CCTV is overwritten.
In my opinion, this was not mere incompetence – it was a cover-up.
In my view, Matthew Pover is the most plausible suspect because:
- He was the only senior nurse on duty during the assault window.
- He had full access to EOL drugs and prescribing authority.
- He was previously convicted of zopiclone theft and supply – the same drug used to sedate patients on the ward.
- On November 16th, he dismissed “extensive and significant” bleeding as “normal fluid,” delaying evidence preservation.
- His convictions were not mentioned at the inquest because they were deemed “irrelevant” – a decision I believe shielded scrutiny. The drugs he previously stole were sedatives.
But in my opinion, any staff member who prescribed or administered EOL drugs between November 13th and 16th is a potential suspect. I believe the drug chart is the missing piece of the puzzle and that close examination of those records will lead to the killer.
In my view, the inquest avoided the drug question. EOL care began on November 13th but no drug list, dosage or prescriber was disclosed. Toxicology results were not presented. The sedation scandal was mentioned as context but not linked to Valerie’s ‘care’. Record-keeping “gaps” were criticised but no one asked who signed off on the morphine or midazolam, which I’m guessing were the EOL drugs administered.
In March 2021, a male healthcare worker was arrested on suspicion of murder and two counts of rape at the hospital. He was released without charge and eliminated from the inquiry. In my opinion, this arrest may have been a distraction, while the real perpetrator continued working on the ward, quietly managing EOL care.
I believe it’s of the utmost importance for the family to demand Valerie’s full medical records under the Data Protection Act 2018 and GDPR. They should request:
- Drug administration records (Nov 12th-16th)
- Prescribing logs
- Nursing notes on EOL care
- Vital signs post-November 13th
A Subject Access Request (SAR) can be filed via the Trust’s PALS service. Farleys Solicitors, who represented the family, should be able to help.
I also think an independent toxicologist should review the records. Even without fresh samples, dosage patterns and timing could reveal foul play.
In conclusion and in my opinion – and please allow me to emphasise that this is JUST MY OPINION as an independent investigative journalist – Valerie Kneale was raped in a hospital bed, then drugged to death to keep her silent.
I believe the killer’s name could appear in the drug charts, in the signature of the nurse who ordered the EOL medications.
This is my theory. It is not proven. But I truly believe that one document – the drug chart – could change everything.
To the Kneale family:
Demand the records, drug charts in particular.

There is a £20,000 Crimestoppers reward and the case is under review.
Valerie deserves justice. I believe with further investigation she still can get it.
