Transgender Bus Driver Jumps in Front of Train After Being Called ‘Sir’ By Passengers

A 27-year-old transgender Chicago Transit Authority bus driver is dead after jumping in front of a train — reportedly distraught that passengers and coworkers referred to her as “sir.”

Ava Michal Hudson, born David Hudson, took her life on August 7, 2024, while wearing her CTA uniform and heading to work. It happened just four days after she attended her brother’s wedding, where family believed she was finally “getting her life together.”

Hudson had been on the job for just seven months, pulling in a taxpayer-funded salary of $61,000 a year — enough to cover her $875-a-month gender transition costs, plus counseling and medical procedures. She proudly posted on Facebook after passing her probation period, calling it a turning point after years of unemployment.

But the reality of the job didn’t match the fantasy. The standard-issue boxy bus driver uniform didn’t hide Hudson’s masculine frame and facial features, and passengers often addressed her as “sir.” Supervisors used male pronouns in at least two disciplinary reports — one over sick-day policy violations, another involving fare-dodging passengers, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Despite CTA’s endless “diversity, equity, and inclusion” campaigns, Hudson said she felt isolated. Other transgender CTA employees had already taken legal action demanding “gender-affirming” surgeries and special bathroom access on the public dime, but Hudson never filed a complaint.

Her background tells a deeper story: a former Wheaton College student and high-achieving high school graduate, Hudson suffered a traumatic brain injury in gymnastics that her family says affected her cognition. Depression, anxiety, and questions about her identity followed, culminating in her transition and move to Chicago in 2021.

This tragedy will be framed by the left as an example of “transphobia,” but the bigger picture is clear: we’ve built a culture where self-worth is tied to pronouns and personal identity instead of resilience. When public employees are so fragile that a word can push them over the edge, no amount of woke training seminars will fix it.
