Morens, 78, who served as a top advisor at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) from 2006 to 2022, faces serious charges including conspiracy against the United States, destruction or falsification of records, concealment of records, and aiding and abetting.

They allegedly moved sensitive discussions off government systems, deleted records, and worked to suppress “alternative theories” about the origins of COVID-19—most notably the lab-leak hypothesis that was ruthlessly mocked and censored in 2020 but has since gained serious traction.

Remember how early questions about the Wuhan Institute of Virology were labeled “conspiracy theories,” “racist,” or “disinformation” by Big Tech, legacy media, and public health officials? Scientists who dared suggest a lab origin faced career threats, while the “natural spillover” story was aggressively promoted.
Morens’ alleged actions fit a familiar pattern: using private channels to avoid scrutiny, boasting about learning “tricks” from NIH’s own FOIA office to make emails “disappear” before searches began, and deleting correspondence after routing it through Gmail.
One infamous email reportedly said: “I learned from our foia lady here how to make emails disappear after i am foia’d but before the search starts, so i think we are all safe. Plus i deleted most of those earlier emails after sending them to gmail.”
The indictment claims these efforts were part of a broader scheme to conceal information and “falsified records in an effort to suppress alternative theories regarding the origins of COVID-19.” Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche put it bluntly: “These allegations represent a profound abuse of trust at a time when the American people needed it most.”
