Anti-austerity Syriza party wins Greek parliamentary elections

Exit polls show anti-austerity party, Syriza, have won the Greek parliamentary election.

The first official results were announced at approximately 19.20 GMT. The outcome of the vote to be finalized on Monday morning.

The exit polls put Alexis Tsipras’s leftwing party on 36-39.5%, well ahead of incumbent conservatives New Democracy

RT report: Greece’s radical leftist party, Syriza, is leading the country’s parliamentary election, claiming 36.5 percent of the vote, and leaving the ruling New Democracy party in second place with 29.22 percent, according to the first official results.

The votes have so far been counted at 25 percent of polling stations across the country, the Interior Ministry of Greece said.

Greek Prime Minister, Antonis Samaras, has acknowledged defeat and congratulated Syriza’s leader, Alexis Tsipras, on the phone regarding his victory in the election, Reuters reports.

Syriza is a fierce opponent of Greece’s bailout deal with the IMF and eurozone countries and they have vowed to reconsider the austerity measures that have caused so much pain in the country.
