Former European Commissioner Thierry Breton has issued a tyrannical warning: if Germany’s right-wing AfD party secures victory in the upcoming general election, the EU may intervene to overturn the results—just as it did during Romania’s presidential race.
In an interview published Thursday, Breton accused Elon Musk of potential “interference” in the German election, claiming that this alone could justify canceling the outcome if the AfD party win a majority of the vote.
The accusation stems from a live-streamed conversation between Musk and AfD leader Alice Weidel on X earlier this week, which Breton claimed could violate EU regulations.

Breton, who stepped down from the European Commission in September following a clash with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, even pointed to a precedent. He referenced Romania’s 2022 election, where EU intervention reportedly targeted right-wing candidate Calin Georgescu, and hinted that similar measures could apply to Germany.

“Let’s enforce our laws in Europe when they are likely to be circumvented, and if they are not enforced, interference becomes inevitable,” Breton declared. “We did it in Romania, and it will obviously have to be done, if necessary, in Germany.”
He went further, warning Musk directly: “From the moment it is broadcast in Europe on a regulated platform, Elon Musk must follow European rules. If he doesn’t, there are fines—and even the possibility of a ban.”
Musk, in typical fashion, fired back at Breton’s remarks, calling him “tyrannical” in a brief but pointed response.
