Laser Cloaking Device Suggested To Hide Earth From Hostile Aliens

A couple of scientists have devised a way for the people of Earth to conceal themselves from hostile aliens.

David Kipping and Alex Teachey recommend the controlled use of lasers as “a cloaking device” in their recently published paper

According to GeoBeats News:

Two scientists with Columbia University have come up with a way for people on Earth to try and hide our existence from extraterrestrial beings. In their recently published paper, David Kipping and Alex Teachey recommend the controlled use of lasers as “a cloaking device.”

Their proposed solution is based on the fact that Earth-based astronomers have been able to find other planets by “looking for the dip in light when a planet moves directly in front of the star it orbits.”

As Teachey explains in an online video, “To make it look like the planet is not there at all, you’ve got to get rid of that dip. You’ve got to fill in the missing starlight.”

He and Kipping have determined that this effect could be achieved by beaming out a laser at approximately 30 megawatts for about 10 hours continuously each year.

Though that would scramble visible light signals, a cloak that can work at all wavelengths would be more difficult, as it would require “a large array of tunable lasers with a total power of [around] 250 [megawatts].”

This research addresses a concern voiced by Stephen Hawking and other scientists, which is that life-forms on other planets may not be friendly.
