Massive Fire Engulfs Manhattan Serbian Orthodox Church

A raging four-alarm fire tore through the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sava in Midtown Manhattan on Sunday night.

Heavy reports:

Easter was celebrated at the church on Sunday, according to its website. Services were held at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m., with an Easter Luncheon in the Church Hall at 1 p.m. Fire officials said it is believed that no one was inside the building when the blaze began.

The building, which opened in 1855, was formerly the Trinity Chapel until it was purchased from the Episcopal Diocese of New York by the Serbian Orthodox Church in 1940, according to the church’s website.

Frightening video footage shows Church on West 25th Street fully engulfed in flames. Fire Department spokesperson said no one is believed to have been inside the building when the fire started.
