The former US Navy Seal who claimed to have shot dead al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden has been arrested on a drink-driving charge.

Robert O’Neill was found asleep during the early hours in Butte, Montana while sat behind the wheel of a car with its engine running, according to the police

The Mirror reports:

Butte-Silver Bow County Undersheriff George Skuletich described the 39-year-old as confused when officers arrived and appeared to be intoxicated when they woke him up.

Police were called after receiving several calls from members of the public reporting a man asleep in a 2005 Nissan Sentra outside a convenience store.

Following his arrest O’Neill was taken to a local police station where he failed a sobriety test.osama bin laden

They charged him when he refused a breathalyser test. He was released after posting a (£485) bond at 4.26am local time.

Police say O’Neill said he had had one drink but later denied it saying he had taken prescription medication to help him sleep.

He told authorities he had flown into Butte from overseas, but police weren’t clear on the exact country.

O’Neill is due to celebrate his 40th birthday on Saturday with a party open to public in Butte. He has been charged with DUI.

In November 2014 O’Neill spoke for the first time about his role to kill bin Laden saying the US Government had no intention of capturing the world’s most wanted man alive.

He appeared on US television to talk about the mission to capture the al Qaeda leader responsible for the 9/11 terror attacks .

Despite facing a huge backlash from former colleagues for speaking out he provided a first hand account of the details leading to the death of bin Laden.

“The more we trained on it the more we realised this is going to be a one-way mission,” O’Neill said as he appeared on ‘The Man who killed Osama bin Laden’.

“We’re going to go and we’re not going to come back,” he continued.

“We’re going to die when the house blows up, we’re going to die when he blows up, or we’re going to be there too long, we get arrested by the Pakistanis, and we’re going to spend the rest of our lives in a Pakistan prison.”osama bin laden

Despite believing they were certain to die in the mission, O’Neill said it did not deter them from wanting to go and take out bin Laden.
