The View‘s Sunny Hostin left her co-hosts speechless this week when she bragged about keeping New York’s “Butcher of Tompkins Square Park” out of prison — a cannibal killer who butchered his victims and fed them to the homeless — and then used the story to argue that accused killer mom Lindsay Clancy deserves the same insanity defense.
Hostin recounted her time as the lone holdout juror in the 1989 case of Daniel Rakowitz, telling viewers she convinced her fellow jurors to reject a prison sentence for the cannibal killer. The confession caught co-host Joy Behar off guard, who asked in disbelief, “The guy who ate the victims?” Hostin answered flatly: “Yes.”
Far from expressing regret, Hostin wore the story as a badge of honor — pointing to the holdout juror who forced a mistrial in Clancy’s case as proof that she isn’t alone in believing killers can be too mentally ill to punish.

“Apparently, several jurors questioned afterwards that one holdout juror was principally responsible for preventing them from returning a guilty verdict. That was me,” Hostin said.

“And it was because I saw clearly that he was psychotic. Of course. He was in a psychosis. He did not mean to kill her. And once he killed her, he panicked. He, he chopped up her body parts, yes, boiled her body parts, tried to commit the perfect crime, and then fed her…” Hostin said before being cutoff by a fellow panelist incredulously asking, “And you got this guy off?!”
“That’s how much I believe in the insanity defense,” Hostin responded, before adding, “And he fed her body parts to the unhoused.”
“Excuse me, can I move over?” one panelist said, attempting to scoot away.
Hostin went on to say she convinced the other jurors to see things her way.
“But all that being said, it was so clear to me in the jury room. And we were sequestered for nine days, one juror threw a chair at me. They were so angry with me. But one by one, I picked them off and said, what about this? What about that? And we ended up all 12 unanimously voting that he was not criminally responsible by reason of insanity. And he’s still in a mental institution being treated.”
The View co-host’s tale shocked many online, with some calling her “evil.”
