Her body was not mummified, but the 33 hundred year old woman’s hairstyle was kept in place with animal fat, which also preserved it for the researchers to study.
Evidence shows that these particular hair extensions may have been applied after the woman’s death.
Experts aren’t sure if the hair extensions were worn by the woman everyday, or if she was just specially coiffed for her burial.
The remains were found along with hundreds of others in the ancient city now called Armana.
Researchers are analyzing the different types of hair found on the deceased as a way to study the ethnic diversity and culture of the city.
Hair extensions recovered by the archaeologists reportedly include hair from several donors, and were a foot long, or shorter.
Jolanda Bos, an archaeologist working on the Amarna Project wrote: “At present we are analyzing the hairs in order to find out whether or not some kind of coloring was used. On other sites dyed hair was found from ancient Egypt.”
