A football match between the German and Dutch national teams in Hannover, Germany has been cancelled and the stadium evacuated for ‘security reasons’

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and other Cabinet ministers were reported to be attending the game, which was due to start at 8:45 pm local time (19:45 GMT)

Sky News reports:

Spectators who had already arrived at the HDI-Arena were told via loudspeaker that the game had been cancelled.

Police officers secured a scene at Robert-Enke-Strasse after finding a suspicious piece of luggage.

The announcement was made an hour and a half before kick-off.

Chancellor Angela Merkel was due to attend the match to send a signal that Germany would not bow to terrorism in the wake of the Paris attacks.

It comes as armed police patrol Wembley ahead of England’s match with France this evening.
