Great White Shark Encounter

An incredible video and story from The Daily Mail:  Despite less-than-ideal water clarity, Canadian tourist Jeremy Stewart captured the moment a great white shark charges and head-butts the cage he was filming in, clearly displaying its menacing jaws in the process.

“I was pretty confident the cage would protect us, and the shark didn’t seem interested in us,” Stewart told the U.K. MailOnline. “It was just going after the bait.… However, the moment when it hit the cage, I got to feel its incredible power. For that second, I don’t know what I was thinking. I just wanted to get out of the way.”

No doubt it was quite an adrenaline rush. Barcroft TV tells Stewart’s story and shares the video:

“You’re pretty safe as long as you keep all your limbs inside the cage,” Stewart told MailOnline. “But you forget all that when it’s swimming right at you with its huge jaws of serrated teeth.”

The close encounter with the 10-foot great white shark occurred in an area off Gansbaai, South Africa, known as Shark Alley. It’s popular for cage diving since the channel between two islands—Dyer Island and Geyser Rock—is a shark haven, drawn there by the Cape fur seals that reside on Dyer Island.

You’d think somebody who experienced a shark encounter such as this one would be hesitant to go into the water without a cage. Not Stewart.

“It didn’t stop me from going surfing the next day in Jeffreys Bay, which is about a day’s drive down the coast,” he told MailOnline.

Obviously he survived.
