The Canadian immigration and citizenship website went down for hours Tuesday and Wednesday as chances of a Donald Trump presidency became a reality during U.S. Election Day.

A spike in searches by people looking to leave the United States for Canada resulted in the website for ‘Citizenship and Immigration Canada’ being taken off-line on Election Day.

NPR.org reports:

Search traffic for “Canada immigration,” “Canada” and “move to Canada” has increased in the United States relative to the past seven days, according to Google Trends. Google reports that the search terms were particularly popular in Oregon, Washington, Vermont and California.

Meanwhile, Business Insider reported that a story called “How to move to Canada and become a Canadian citizen” was the top story on the site Tuesday night.

The Wayback Machine has an archive of the currently inaccessible site, if you’re curious, including the page with information on “how you can immigrate to Canada.

Will anyone actually do it?

NPR’s Danielle Kurtzleben took a long look at that question earlier this year.

“Every election, there’s that chorus of people who insist they are moving to Canada if candidate so-and-so wins. Everyone knows these people. They’re tweeting and Googling about it as you read this,” she wrote. (Which is undoubtedly true right now.)

Determining how many people actually follow through is surprisingly difficult, Danielle found. The short answer is: a few, but probably for reasons more complicated than pure politics.

Hopefully the site is up and running now. Those immigrating out of the U.S. due to Trump’s election will help drain the swamp, and that is very much needed.

  2. Personally, I DON’T WANT the people who would immigrate to Canada because of the election result. Those would be the people who supported the Clinton crime family and the unethical operations, including terrorism and the NWO, that Trump opposes.

  3. As a fellow canadian we don’t want these Clinton trash supporters and there ideology polluting my contracting we are good without you retards. Pleaee stay away from canada, we have guns as well and we are not affair to use them. Remember the war of 1812. Congrats to my USA cousins and there smart choice of voting for trump !
