ISIS Will Target the U.S. Power Grid, Former CIA Says; Could Tap Other Fellow Extremist Groups to Do the Job

Fact checked

From the International Business Times (link): “A former CIA officer has warned the United States its power grid will sure to be massively hit once the ISIS carries out its anticipated terror strike against the superpower.

Dr Peter Pry, a former CIA officer, made his presumption based on a leaked government study by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. The study said the country stands to suffer a coast-to-coast blackout with saboteurs just merely knocking down nine key substations.

If this happens, the country will be enveloped in total darkness for months’ time, at least 18 months or probably more.

The U.S. has a total of 55,000 electrical power substations.

Pry, who is also executive director of the Task Force on National and Homeland Security and director of the U.S. Nuclear Strategy Forum, both congressional advisory boards, said the the electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack would be so huge “even without the need for any nuclear device or delivery system.”

Such attacks to a sovereign nation’s electric grid is nothing new. In June, it happened in Yemen where 23 million people were left helpless and without power for a day.

Yemen’s Energy Minister said gunman attacked and took down power lines, essentially cutting power to all the country’s provinces. “The act of sabotage at Kilometre 78 suspended the entire national power and energy grid, including at Marib’s gas plant, and cut power in all provinces,” Aljazeera had quoted an unidentified ministry spokesman then.

And then in October 2013, a breakaway group from Mexico’s Michoacan drug cartel known as the Knights Templar took out the power grid in Michoacan state, which according to Forbes left more than 400,000 with electricity after nine substations were attacked.

Pry seemed to imply the scenario of such attacks on electric power grids is a scenario already happening elsewhere and could very much potentially happen in the U.S.

And they don’t need to be physically in the U.S. just to take down those power lines, Pry said.

All the ISIS needed to do to carry out their militant plans was just to hire fellow extremists to take on the job, what with its reported ownership of millions of money.

“All they’ve got to do is contact the Knights Templar, wire these guys $10 million, I mean they’ll do anything for money. And say, ‘Hey, go across that open U.S. border and take out the electric grid in Arizona, or New Mexico, or Minnesota or New York. Or the entire nation.'”

If the terror groups across the south border don’t bite the huge bait, the ISIS can tap the Muslim terror cells very much already within the country.”
