Oxford University Scientists Warn ‘Risky’ NASA Plans Could Provoke ‘Alien Invasion’

Fact checked

Oxford University scientists have sounded the alarm bell over NASA plans to broadcast location data and other information about the human race into space, claiming that NASA could unintentionally trigger an “alien invasion.”

A NASA-led team of researchers is currently working on “Beacon in the Galaxy” (BITG), a program with the declared am of greeting “extraterrestrial intelligences.

The US space agency wants to beam the signal from the SETI Institute’s Allen Telescope array in California and China’s Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST). The signal would include information including as the biochemical composition of life on Earth, the Solar System’s time-stamped position in the Milky Way, digitized images of humans — with an invitation for extraterrestrials to respond. Per RT:

Anders Sandberg, a senior researcher at Oxford’s Future of Humanity Institute (FHI), argued that such a broadcast could be risky. In the unlikely event that an alien civilization receives the message, he said, the response might not be just a friendly greeting.

The search for alien life has a “giggle factor” around it, Sandberg told the UK’s Telegraph newspaper in an article published on Sunday. “Many people refuse to take anything related to it seriously, which is a shame because this is important stuff.”

Another FHI scientist at Oxford, Toby Ord, has suggested that there should be public discussion before sending signals to aliens. Even listening for incoming messages could be dangerous, he added, as they could be used to entrap Earthlings. “These dangers are small but poorly understood and not yet well managed,” he said.

Ord insisted that there’s no scientific consensus on the ratio of peaceful to hostile civilizations around the galaxy. “Given the downside could be much bigger than the upside, this doesn’t sound to me like a good situation in which to take active steps toward contact,” he said.

Weaker signals have been broadcast into space in the past using earlier technologies, such as the Arecibo message sent in 1974. Russian scientists did a series of such broadcasts, called Cosmic Calls, in 1999 and 2003. Sandberg theorized that “the poor aliens might already be getting various messages sent for all sorts of reasons.”

Scientists with the BITG group have speculated that an alien species that is sufficiently advanced to achieve communication through the cosmos would “very likely have attained high levels of cooperation amongst themselves and thus will know the importance of peace and collaboration.” Canadian futurist George Dvorsky dismissed that theory as an “old trope,” saying he can think of a “host of scenarios” in which extraterrestrials with malevolent tendencies continue to exist.

  1. “The signal would include information including as the biochemical composition of life on Earth, the Solar System’s time-stamped position in the Milky Way…”

Or they might try and steal our identity, start taking out loans in our name. They might just become really pesky neighbours, moaning about our leaves being blown into their lawn. The possibilities are endless – and none of them positive.

    • 2,5 million years at light speed to the nearest system Andromeda so 670 million MPH for 2.5 million years

  2. Light speed plus a few hundred million years from now will we still be home watching?the price is right? or at the college kegs on a ox or in a ford?

  3. I thought the naked picture looked familiar.
From Wikipedia: “The Pioneer plaques are a pair of gold-anodized aluminum plaques that were placed on board the 1972 Pioneer 10 and 1973 Pioneer 11 spacecraft, featuring a pictorial message, in case either Pioneer 10 or 11 is intercepted by intelligent extraterrestrial life. The plaques show the nude figures of a human male and female along with several symbols that are designed to provide information about the origin of the spacecraft.
The Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft were the first human-built objects to achieve escape velocity from the Solar System. The plaques were attached to the spacecraft’s antenna support struts in a position that would shield them from erosion by interstellar dust.
The original idea, that the Pioneer spacecraft should carry a message from mankind, was first mentioned by Eric Burgess when he visited the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, during the Mariner 9 mission. He approached Carl Sagan, who had lectured about communication with intelligent extraterrestrials at a conference in Crimea.
Sagan was enthusiastic about the idea of sending a message with the Pioneer spacecraft. NASA agreed to the plan and gave him three weeks to prepare a message. Together with Frank Drake he designed the plaque, and the artwork was prepared by Linda Salzman Sagan, who was Sagan’s wife at the time.
Both plaques were manufactured at Precision Engravers, San Carlos, California.
The first plaque was launched with Pioneer 10 on March 2, 1972, and the second followed with Pioneer 11 on April 5, 1973.”

    • 2.5 trillion lights years to andromeda the nearest system so 670 million MPH light speed 186,000 miles per sec so 2.5 million light years away so DREAM ON

  4. Pioneer 10&11 not ever designed for deep space but for mars.11 went 32,400 MPH and took only 11 hours to the moon.10 went 7.6 billion miles 11 went 9.1 billion miles before thier signals systems failed. They did`nt ever leave our solar system as that is over five trillion miles to the clouds of comets. And it took them over 20 years to go 7.6 billion miles and 30 years to go 9.1 billion miles so they failed to get to the comet belt as far as we know but there are faster deep space craft now that should be able to go farther but five trillion miles not for a while yet and all solar sytems that we know of go back hole sooner or later. So really not possible to LEAVE the solar system as the energys needed to leave are not as great as the energys of the solar system itself

  5. DUM DUM got GUM GUM 2.5 million light years ago on ANDROMEDA at warp speed 670 million MPH for only 2 and a half million years

  6. do they expect a call back from them thar aliens?
are they using an Obiden phone that Slim gave ’em at the border?

  7. NOT EVEN POSSIBLE to send any signal even at light speed-they are pulling your leg for free ryds at NASA

    • Light speed is not an absolute – it can be speeded up, slowed down and even stopped. Throws all their garbage theories out the window.

      • 186.000 miles per sec or 670 million MPH as rated to travel is as fast as it gets.So 2,5 million light years to the nearest STAR ANDROMEDA .SO anything we project as far as light would`nt get any signal anywhere but around our near space
