A photo posted by the Department of Interior that shows a squirrel eating a snake has gone viral. The unusual photograph was taken at Guadalupe Mountains National Park in Salt Flat, Texas.

A few days ago, giant redheaded centipedes from Texas were quite popular on social media after a photo of one crawling on a broom in Garner State Park was posted to Twitter.
Now, it’s the squirrels’ turn.
On Wednesday, the U.S. Department of the Interior posted an image to Facebook with the caption, “Don’t Mess with Texas Squirrels!”
The photo shows a squirrel eating, of all things, a snake at Guadalupe Mountains National Park in Salt Flat, Texas. Since most people don’t think of snakes as part of a squirrel’s diet, the surprising visual is being widely shared online.
According to the Facebook post, “Rock squirrels eat mostly plant material, fruits and nuts, but don’t let their humble appearance fool you. They will also eat bird eggs, lizards and snakes.”
A park ranger captured the fight and ensuing feast on camera after hearing noises near the Frijole Ranch.
If you are wondering how much of the snake got consumed, the department’s Facebook post notes, “The squirrel devoured most of the snake, bones and all, down to the last two inches.”
