AC/DC Drummer Phil Rudd Charged In New Zealand For Procuring Murder And Threatening To Kill

AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd has been charged with attempting to procure a murder in New Zealand, according to local media reports. Rudd will also reportedly face charges for the possession of drugs.

Rudd appeared in Tauranga District Court on Thursday before being released on bail, which was given on condition that he will not contact the people involved in the alleged murder plot and will stay at his home in Bureta, a suburb of Tauranga, about 124 miles southeast of Auckland, according to Sky News. The 60-year-old reportedly hired a hit man to kill two people between Sept. 25 and Sept. 26.

The Australia-born drummer was arrested Thursday morning after New Zealand police raided his home. Police reportedly said that the raid was a result of “information received” from a member of the public. If convicted, Rudd could face a maximum of 10 years in prison on the charge of procuring a person to murder.

Rudd, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003, will also face charges for threatening to kill and the possession of methamphetamine and cannabis, BBC reported. He is due to make another appearance in court on Nov. 27 but the date could change, The Associated Press reported.

In 2010, Rudd, whose birth name is Phil Witschke, was arrested and fined for the possession of cannabis, Reuters reported.

Rudd joined AC/DC, which was formed by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young, in 1975 but was dropped from the band in 1983. He later rejoined the Australian hard rock band in 1994. AC/DC is scheduled to release their new album, “Rock or Bust,” on Dec. 2.
