Breaking: At least two shot at Florida State University

Two people were shot shortly before 1 a.m. Thursday at Florida State University.

Ian Clark, a nursing supervisor at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, a Level-2 trauma center, confirmed that two patients had been brought to the facility with gunshot wounds.

Clark was unable to provide any information about the condition of the patients.

The shots, which are reported to have come from Strozier Library, started shortly before 1 a.m. ET, three freshmen who were in the DeGraff Hall dormitory at the time said.

They began getting reports from friends locked down in the library, they said.

“We know there are definitely people who saw the shooter,” said Anthony Coons.

His friend Max Martin described the surreal scene. “You hear all these stories on the news then it happens,” Martin said. “This is something you never want to happen.”

More than 20 emergency vehicles from Tallahassee’s police and departments, as well as from Leon County blocked off the area around Landis Green, near the library. The campus’ main library, which is named for a former president of the university, and usually open 24 hours on weekdays.

David Northway, a Tallahassee Police Department spokesman, was on his way to the campus to provide further details to the media.

TPD Chief Michael DeLeo, Deputy Chief Darrell E. Furuseth and Maj. Lonnie Scott are all on scene.

Florida State University police issued an alert warning students that read: “Dangerous Situation! Main Campus — Tallahassee. Seek shelter immediately, away from doors and windows.”
