UK Parliament debate Donald Trump ban

British parliament are to formally debate whether or not to ban Donald Trump from the UK today at 4:00 pm (GMT).

The debate comes after over half a million British citizens signed a petition in support of banning Trump from the country for hate speech. [scroll down for live video]

The petition reads:

The UK has banned entry to many individuals for hate speech. The same principles should apply to everyone who wishes to enter the UK.

If the United Kingdom is to continue applying the ‘unacceptable behaviour’ criteria to those who wish to enter its borders, it must be fairly applied to the rich as well as poor, and the weak as well as powerful.

Thinkprogress.org reports:

Famous Americans who have been banned include Martha Stewart, Edward Snowden, Mike Tyson and Busta Rhymes.

The proposal earned full consideration in parliament once it collected 100,000 signatures.

The measure has divided politicians in the UK.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn does not think Trump should be banned. Instead, he’d like to invite Trump to come meet his wife, who is Mexican, and visit a local mosque.

Alex Salmond, a member of the UK parliament representing Scotland, supports the ban. “He wants to ban all Muslims from the US. I want to ban all Donald Trumps from Scotland,” Salmond said.

The UK government has declined to formally comment on Trump but noted that, “[t]he Home Secretary may exclude a non-European Economic Area national from the UK if she considers their presence in the UK to be non-conducive to the public good.” Further, “[t]he Prime Minister [David Cameron] has made clear that he completely disagrees with Donald Trump’s remarks.”

Cameron said he opposes banning Trump, however.

Trump, who owns two golf courses in Scotland, has threatened to cancel hundreds of millions in investments if he is banned.
