The 68-year-old was spear fishing in Florida next to a boat his family were sat in, when a line became detached and they drifted apart.
When the experienced diver surfaced he found himself in nothing but open sea and things quickly got worse
Within minutes he noticed an eight foot shark circling beneath him, and it was joined by a second within the hour.
‘The thought of the movie ‘Open Water,’ you just think, wow, this is just like the movie,’ Randy told Florida Today.
Capturing the footage on his GoPro, the grandfather said the animal was becoming more aggressive each time it passed.
‘He came real close to me one time and when I kicked, I kicked his pectoral fin,’ he added.
Fortunately, after an hour and a half of fighting off the sharks he was picked up by another boat and eventually reunited with his family.
You only have to watch the footage to appreciate how scary the experience was but Randy is made of sterner stuff.
‘It wasn’t really that scary of a situation,’ he said before adding:
‘In fact, I’m hoping to be able to go diving this weekend.’
