Throughout history many prisons were places teeming with violence, disease, inhumane treatment, and death. Not surprisingly, a number of them are said to be overflowing with unsettled spirits.
Here are 10 very haunted US correctional facilities.
Number 10. Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Prisoners here were subjected to any one of a number of tortures, including being dipped in water and hung out to freeze. It’s been closed since 1971, but the spirits within moan, whisper, and even grasp onto the living to this day.

Number 9. Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, San Francisco, California. Among its infamous inmates was Al Capone, but nowadays it’s the ghosts that get most of the attention. Pictures of spirits, inexplicable bone-chilling cold spots, and mysterious cries are just a few of the recently reported activities.
Number 8. West Virginia State Penitentiary, Moundsville, West Virginia. If dismal lives beget angry ghosts, then this place has got to have thousands. Until the mid 1980s up to three inmates occupied each 5-by-7 cell, day after day, year after year.
Number 7. Burlington County Prison, Mount Holly, New Jersey. Joel Clough, a murderer who was executed and buried on the grounds, is the primary haunter. One ghost seeker said that he tried to make a recording of the spirit, but his otherwise working equipment kept getting mysteriously shut off.
Number 6. Missouri State Penitentiary, Jefferson City, Missouri. Time Magazine once called this place ‘America’s bloodiest 47 acres’. In 1954, 25 hundred prisoners rioted. Among the casualties was a man in solitary confinement who was tortured and killed by fellow inmates.
Number 5. Wyoming Frontier Prison, Rawlins, Wyoming. Among the hundreds who perished here, either from executions, poor conditions, or brutality, was a young male who murdered and cannibalized two girls. Based on a recently recorded Q&A, he has no idea how he died.
Number 4. Old Montana Prison, Deer Lodge, Montana. If there’s one thing to be said about the ghosts that occupy this place, it’s that they know how to keep themselves entertained. One of the sounds often heard is the shuffling of cards.
Number 3. Ohio State Reformatory, Mansfield, Ohio. When it opened the prison was heralded as the dawn of a new era of rehabilitation. Before long, it became a place filled with murder and abuse, much like the others. Reports of paranormal activity within the decayed building are plentiful.
Number 2. Franklin County Jail, Benton, Illinois. Those who prefer their ghosts to be chatty and interactive will find Franklin County to be ideal. Video and audio recordings of the spirits show they like to converse with the living.
Number 1. Allegan Old Jail, Allegan County, Michigan. This small building once served as both the sheriff’s home and an incarceration facility. Some of the spirits still hanging around seem of a friendly sort and include the woman who would serve meals to inmates.
