Video: Woman Jailed For Not Mowing Her Lawn

Fact checked

Yahoo!  News posted an article today saying, “Karen Holloway just spent six hours in a jail cell for failing to maintain her yard in accordance with the standards set by the city.

The saga began last summer, when Holloway was sent a citation for her overgrown grass and shrubbery. Holloway, who works a full-time job and has two children living at home, a husband in school, and one family vehicle, admits the yard needed some attention but that it just wasn’t feasible to do the work.

‘The bushes and trees were overgrown. But that’s certainly not a criminal offense,’ she says.”

This isn’t the first time this has happened in the US.  According to a 2012 report by Charleston, SC local news affiliate ABC 4, “Linda Ruggles was cited for a Clean Lot Violation in December 2010, for what Ruggles says was a messy yard and loose shingles on her roof. According to a police report, she was found guilty in September of last year and given a sentence of 10 days in jail or a $480 fine.

‘I don’t have $480. I didn’t then. I still don’t. I just got the house out of foreclosure. It took everything I could do. I sold my jewelry. I sold my car. I sold my silverware. I sold anything I could sell…and I got my job out of foreclosure,’ Ruggles said.”
