Rep. AOC says she supports the defund the police movement

Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says she supports the movement to defund the New York Police Department in the wake of George Floyd’s death.

AOC admitted in a congressional primary debate Friday night on NY1 that she has “actively engaged in advocacy for” a “reduction of our NYPD budget and defunding a $6 billion NYPD budget that costs us books in the hands of our children and costs us very badly needed investment in NYCHA [New York City Housing Authority] and public housing.”

The far-left Congresswoman echoed the extremist rhetoric of Black Lives Matter activists that New York City should be spending less money on law enforcement and more money on social causes.

Breitbart.com reports: Her stance puts her at odds with the head of the Congressional Black Caucus and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who do not support defunding the police.

Ocasio-Cortez, left-wing New York City council members, and left-wing activists are calling on New York to get rid of at least $1 billion out of the NYPD’s $6 billion budget.

Meanwhile, de Blasio defended the NYPD’s budget, saying that the money was necessary to keep New York City safe.

“I do not believe it’s a good idea to reduce the budget of the agency that’s here to keep us safe,” de Blasio said Friday during a press briefing.

Ocasio-Cortez offered her support for the #DefundthePolice movement while talking about what she would do to reform policing. Of the reforms she laid out, she said she would get rid of qualified immunity that protects police officers from legal accountability and stop the transfer of military arms to police departments.

The Defund the Police petition has also gotten celebrity support from Lizzo, John Legend, and Natalie Portman. All are demanding that police budgets be slashed in favor of investing in health care, education, and community programs.

  1. Police in Australia have taken down the country’s biggest child sex ring.Is this the reason AOC wan’t to defund our police ?
I get it, she doesn’t have any children. I think we need to defund AOC and let her become a low end bartender again (that’s all the IQ she has)

for your ears especially – I’ve grown tired of politicians of any
order crying on the lives and backs of purposely marginalized
citizens – and of course all citizens. I have 3 generations living
in public housing. If BLM, then put an end to all exploitive
policies that insure there is a very low ceiling placed a fraction of
an inch above the heads of newborns and moves upward as a child
statue also grows upward. There will always be those who escape, or
    hand the guidance to assemulate.

Harlem is my place of birth, not the upper Bronx, and certainly not Westchester County. Retrain the police, really retrain them, stop domestic and international wars, both of which are only conducted at tax payer expense, of always no contest opponents. A sane nation can
not afford to be constantly at war with enemies, especially those falsely target for greed and selfish gains.

and Antifa will join you, if they have not signed on. Yes! I was abused by police officers as early as my elementary school days growing up in the South Bronx (149 St. Southern Blvd.), but I was also protected by police officers during encounters with them as a member of CORE. Maybe this is why I’ve reached age 81, to share a simple truth not learned in any school, grade to University, it is called ‘Lived Humanity’. Disenfranchised peoples regardless of
color, class, race, religion (CCRR) have always made useful sound bites, bites I have heard all my life, spoken in one form or another. No different today. In my day we organized ‘Neighborhood Watch’. How else were we to surprisingly discover, it was a neighbor stealing our automobiles, one ready to be shipped to Puerto Rico.

    Stop
affording wars, which are no longer affordable, and invest in natural born citizens and infrastructure collapsing or on verge.

    Invest
and learn nutritional and natural health care that today will heal, not just maintain medicine subscribers – and you will see all common diseases decline sharply.

    Invest
in exceptional education models that actually excelled anything public schools could achieve. I enrolled my children in out of district schools for such a model program, addressed to a aunt living in the district The effort was to give them a better education.

  3. How about defunding elected officials that despise the city/state/country they supposedly represent?
