An intruder climbed the wall of the Ecuadorian embassy in London where Julian Assange has asylum, sparking fears the WikiLeaks founder was the subject of a failed assassination plot.

WikiLeaks tweeted about the incident on Sunday, providing a Google maps link showing the wall of the embassy in Knightsbridge, London. Twitter users were quick to point out the wall is “hardly a trivial wall to scale,” while the majority of responses speculated it may have been an assassination attempt

Senior US government figures including Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden have called for WikiLeaks to be registered as a terrorist organization and founder Julian Assange to be considered a “high-tech” terrorist, while government strategists and military top brass have called for his assassination.

Karl Rove described the WikiLeaks editor-in-chief as an “enemy combatant” who should be “hunted down.”

Democrat strategist and CNN commentator Bob Beckel went further, publicly calling for an illegal assassination. Stating that he is against the death penalty, Beckel suggested that in the case of “treasonous, traitor” Assange we should forget due process and “illegally shoot the son of a bitch.

A dead man can’t leak stuff,” he said.

Last month, WikiLeaks released nearly 20,000 emails that appeared to show the DNC favoring Hillary Clinton over insurgent challenger Bernie Sanders and colluding with mainstream media during the primary season. The disclosure led to the resignation of DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz and several other senior officials. A class action lawsuit has also been launched.

Assange has promised that more DNC leaks will be released in due course, fuelling speculation of an ‘October Surprise‘ that would derail the Clinton presidential bid.

The US periodically confirms that a criminal national security investigation into Julian Assange and WikiLeaks is ongoing — for example to a US court on 4 March 2015, and to the Washington Post on 28 January 2015.
