New Study: 670,000 Chinese Citizens Die Of Smog-Related Deaths Each Year

From an article on Higher Perspective: It’s no secret that burning fossil fuels for energy can be a big polluter, but China has really taken the phenomenon to a new level. The country as a whole is hungry for juice, and China has been happy to build more coal plants, but it has come at a cost to the citizens of China. According to a recent study, the average life expectancy in China has been reduced by 5.5 years in areas of the country where coal pollution is more prevalent.

Research from Tsinghua University also found that there are some 670,000 premature deaths from stroke, lung cancer, coronary disease and COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, all linked to the pollution from coal plants, especially plants that emit particulate matter of 2.5 micrometers or less, which has been officially recognized as a human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

According to the study, 70% of the Chinese population is exposed to annual PM 2.5 pollution levels higher than 35 micrograms per cubic meter, which is the country’s benchmark for clean air. See for yourself the air quality of China:

The true impact of air pollution in China is shrouded in a deep, smoggy cloud of mystery still. Accounts vary, with one study saying that outdoor pollution contributed to 1.2 million premature deaths in China in 2010, which is 40% of the global total. Former health minister Chen Zhu says that pollution could cause 350,000 to 500,000 premature deaths.

One thing is for certain though, one premature death is too many.
