Metro.co.uk report:
Professor Hawking was giving Californian Adaeze Uyanwah, 24, a tour of London’s Science Museum today after she beat 10,000 international entrants to win a trip round London with celebrity guides.
And speaking at the museum, Professor Hawking said that he believes the ‘long-term future’ of the human race is in space travel and revealed that he considered ‘aggression’ humanity’s biggest failing.
‘The long-term future of the human race must be space and that it represents an important life insurance for our future survival,’ he said.
‘It could prevent the disappearance of humanity by the colonisation of other planets.’
He added: ‘The human failing I would most like to correct is aggression.
‘It may have had survival advantage in caveman days, to get more food, territory or a partner with whom to reproduce, but now it threatens to destroy us all.
‘A major nuclear war would be the end of civilization, and maybe the end of the human race.’
The theoretical physicist urged people to be more empathetic, saying that empathy ‘brings us together in a peaceful, loving state.’
