The Smithsonian’s National Zoo announced the death of the smallest of two twins recently born in their facilities.  The twin was the smaller of two panda cubs born earlier this week.

According to GeoBeats News:

The death occurred around 2 p.m. Eastern time on Wednesday.

According to reports, zoo officials had been concerned about the cub’s health, as there were indications of regurgitation, which can impede breathing, and an inability to maintain its weight.

It weighed only 3 ounces when it was born on August 22nd, compared to its twin which arrived in at 4.8 ounces.

Veterinarians had been treating the more vulnerable cub with a mix of antibiotics, formula, an infant electrolyte solution, and other hydrating fluids.

Care continues to be given to the mother, Mei Xiang, and the surviving sibling who zoo officials report “appears to be strong and behaving normally.”
