Linda Blair as Regan in ‘The Exorcist’ complete with green pea soup. During the initial release of the film in 1973 there were reports of audiences fainting and throwing up at the theaters as well as fleeing them altogether.

MoviePilot.com reports:

‘Cinemas in the cities of Marseille, Strasbourg and Montpellier in France have cancelled future screenings of Annabelle due to a security concern after huge crowds of youths packed theaters well over capacity (up to 1,000 people in a 450-seat theater) and began fighting, throwing popcorn, and ripping up seats.’

The film is based on a doll, Annabelle, possessed by a demon and intent on terrorizing a young family in the suburbs of California.

It is based on the alleged true story of  a mother who, in 1970, purchases an Annabelle doll for her daughter’s birthday. The daughter shortly after receiving the doll begins to notice creepy things happening with her roommate. According to Ed and Lorraine Warren – two psychics who were brought in to help with the disturbances – the doll was possessed by a demon:

“The doll apparently moved on its own, relatively unnoticeable movements at first, like a change in position, but as time passed the movement became more noticeable…Sometimes the doll would be found crossed legged on the couch with its arms folded , other times it was found upright, standing on its feet, leaning against a chair in the dining room… the doll not only moved but could write too”
