The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) have announced an investigation into shocking alleged cover-ups.

Senior police and Special Branch are accused of sinking investigations into historical child sex abuse by VIPs, MPs and officers in new corruption allegations against Scotland Yard.

It is alleged  that a north London police officer accused of being part of a paedophile ring had the evidence against him covered up by Special Branch. There are also claims that Special Branch sought to cover up the involvement of an MP in child sex offences in the 1970s.

According to the IPCC these accusations are just two of 13 new cases of alleged historical corruption in the Metropolitan Police relating to the investigation of child abuse dating from the 1970s and 2000s.

Sky News reports: The majority of the investigations stem from allegations made by retired Met officers.

Another corruption allegation involves Essex Police and also relates to child sex offices.

Of the 13 claims, eight relate to investigations into the involvement of MPs in child abuse.

Scotland Yard is looking into the new claims, along with 17 cases announced earlier this year.

These all related to suppressing evidence, hindering or halting investigations and covering up offences because of the involvement of MPs and police officers.

The corruption inquiries will be managed and overseen by the IPCC and are to be conducted by the Metropolitan Police’s Directorate of Professional Standards.

Special Branch features in three of the latest claims.

One centred on allegations about an attempt in the 1970s to interfere in an investigation that would have revealed an MP to be involved in child sex offences.

Special Branch officers are also said to have taken over an investigation into child sex offences committed by an MP which was then shelved.

Another claim being assessed is that the security unit covered up evidence relating to an allegation that a serving Met Police officer was involved in a paedophile ring in north London.

A former Greater Manchester Police officer who says he saw first hand how investigations into the late MP Cyril Smith were mysteriously closed down, has told Sky News that investigations should be far wider than just police misconduct.

The retired officer who did not want to be named said: “I am concerned, however, that the statements being made by the Met and the IPCC seem to be targeting Special Branch officers.

“There has been no mention of other Services – MI5 for instance.

“Today there has been a call for anyone with information to come forward.  There is no statement regarding anonymity nor protection from either prosecution nor safety of pensions.”
