US Blocks UN Call For Independent Probe Into Israeli Killing Of Palestinian Protesters

A damning UN Security Council draft statement on Israel’s use of violence against protesters at the Gaza border was blocked by the US on Monday.

Fifty nine people were massacred, including women and children as the new US Embassy opened in Jerusalem

The draft statement expressed outrage and sorrow over the level of violence used by Israeli forces and demanded an independent and transparent probe into the situation.

RT reports: Monday was the bloodiest day in six weeks of protesting by Palestinians at Israel’s border wall, during which hundreds of people have been killed and thousands injured by Israeli soldiers. The IDF (Israel Defense Forces) has used tear gas and small arms against demonstrators, saying the use of force is justified due to the threat they pose. Palestinian protesters have burned tires, thrown stones, and launched incendiary kites during the stand-off.

The draft statement, which was blocked by Washington on Monday, expressed outrage over the scale of violence and called for an independent investigation of the situation.

The Security Council expresses its outrage and sorrow at the killing of Palestinian civilians exercising their right to peaceful protest,” the document, circulated by Kuwait and cited by AFP and Haaretz, reads. “The Security Council calls for an independent and transparent investigation into these actions to ensure accountability.”

The draft statement was to be in response to the killing of 59 Palestinian protesters, including seven youths, who were shot by Israeli soldiers on the day the US Embassy opened for business in Jerusalem. More than 2,700 activists were injured in Gaza, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.

The continued Israeli crackdown on protesters has sparked worldwide condemnation, but Washington rushed to justify Israel’s response, accusing the Palestinian militant movement Hamas of fueling the protests.

“The responsibility for these tragic deaths rests squarely with Hamas,” White House spokesman Raj Shah told reporters. “Hamas is intentionally and cynically provoking this response.”

US President Donald Trump’s decision to move the US Embassy to Jerusalem was even condemned by America’s closest allies. Israel seized control of the eastern part of the city during the 1967 Six Day War, but the occupation was not recognized by any other nation until Trump’s move. The draft statement included thinly-veiled criticism of the decision, calling on all nations to not “undertake any steps that further aggravate the situation, including any unilateral and unlawful measures undermining the prospects of peace.”

The US has a long record of using its veto power in the UN Security Council to shield Israel from international scrutiny.

“Since at least 1967, the Israeli military has enjoyed a green light from Washington to carry out an uninterrupted string of attacks on civilian populations in occupied Palestine as well as in the cities of its Arab neighbors,” author and longtime critic of Israeli policies Max Blumenthal told RT.

“This has not changed under Trump. Indeed, Trump and his inner circle have given Israel all the diplomatic cover it needs to ‘mow the lawn’ down to its roots.”
